Destination

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is Maharashtra’s oldest and largest national park and one of Central India’s most rewarding wildlife destinations. Known for its consistent tiger sightings, the reserve is also home to leopards, dholes, sloth bears, Indian bison, and more than 200 bird species. ‘Tadoba’ traces back to Taru, a tribal chief remembered in local legend, while ‘Andhari’ refers to the river that sustains the forest’s rich ecology. Svasara is located just 300 metres from Kolara Gate and is easily reached from Nagpur, approximately 2 hours away.

Design and Concept

Svasara, meaning “the nest”, began as a private family retreat envisioned by the late S P Sinha, a wildlife photographer deeply connected to Tadoba. Over time, it evolved into a boutique jungle lodge that welcomes travellers with a curiosity about forests and wildlife. Set across ten acres, the property overlooks forested hills and land that has been consciously allowed to regenerate into a rewilded sanctuary. The lodge offers twelve habitat-themed rooms alongside a spa, swimming pool, and shared spaces designed for quiet interaction. The lobby features a ceiling painted with Warli art, while the spa is housed in a structure built from reclaimed teak and salvaged tiles. The outdoor dining pavilion, The Teak House, draws inspiration from Maratha garden pavilions and also serves as an open-air Jungle Cinema for nature films and discussions. The defining architectural element is the Interpretation Centre, a dedicated space designed to deepen ecological understanding. Rather than focusing solely on sightings, the lodge emphasises habitat, biodiversity, and interdependence. Shared spaces open toward gardens and natural light, maintaining a connection with the landscape while preserving residential scale. The design avoids theatrical safari aesthetics, favouring integration.

Know Your Host

Svasara is a family-owned lodge led by Ratika, whose early love for animals and training at École hôtelière de Lausanne shaped the vision for a low-impact wildlife retreat. Ranjit and Nandita oversee daily operations, ensuring that each stay balances comfort, learning, and respect for the forest.

Facilities

All rooms are air-conditioned and include en suite bathrooms and tea and coffee stations. The lodge also offers a swimming pool, spa facilities, and comfortable common areas for relaxation between forest visits.

Dining

Cuisine at Svasara highlights Varhadi and Vidarbha flavours, using regional spices such as goda masala. The kitchen actively documents recipes from nearby villages and tribal communities, while dinner menus rotate through regional Indian cuisines, including Awadhi, Anglo-Indian, Bihari, and Bengali. Continental options and special dietary meals are available on request. Guests may also cook alongside the chefs at The Teak House, with produce from the lodge’s kitchen garden.

Experiences

Svasara’s proximity to the forest makes it ideal for nature walks and observing smaller fauna such as jungle cats, civets, reptiles, and birds. Experienced naturalists with expertise across wildlife, birds, butterflies, geology, and forestry lead Forest safaris and guided walks. Birdlife on the lodge grounds includes the Indian Roller, Baya Weaver, Black Drongo, Asian Pied Starling, and Common Kestrel. The nature shop stocks regional handicrafts, wildlife-inspired products from local NGOs, and Tadoba-themed merchandise. Santraa, the in-house spa, uses oranges grown in the region along with natural Ayurvedic and herbal oils, reflecting the lodge’s emphasis on local sourcing.
