Nestled amidst the dramatic granite outcrops of Rajasthan's Jawai region, the lodge offers one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife experiences, where leopards and the Rabari pastoral community have shared the same landscape in remarkable harmony for generations.

Founded by conservationist and wildlife photographer Shatrunjay Pratap Singh, the lodge emerged from a determined effort to protect Jawai's leopard habitat from mining and ecological degradation. Today, it stands as a symbol of how tourism can support both wildlife conservation and local communities while offering intimate encounters with one of India's most fascinating landscapes.

Nine independent cottages (four Suite Cottages, three Junior Suite Cottages, and two Deluxe rooms) are spread across the eleven-acre estate are oriented toward Liloda Hill. The Cottage Suites include an additional living space, and all rooms feature large, well-lit bedrooms in natural tones, and ensuite bathrooms. The design remains deliberately grounded — solid stone façades, local materials, and minimal distraction from the surrounding terrain. Picture windows stretch end to end, bringing nature and wildlife into view from your bed - deliberately keeping a sense of the wild in proximity. For photographers, practical details matter: ample plug points, generous table space, and natural light throughout.

Destination

Jawai Bandh, located in southern Rajasthan, is a landscape of towering granite boulders and a large dam. This region is famous for having India’s highest concentration of leopards, which coexist in harmony with Rabari shepherds. Safaris often reveal leopards resting on the sun-warmed rocks, and migratory birds at the reservoir. Located 140 km from Udaipur and 150 km from Jodhpur, Jawai offers a different wildlife experience.

Design and Concept

Shatrunjay Pratap Singh created the lodge to protect the unique coexistence between leopards and the local Rabari community. Designed as a boutique retreat where ‘luxury embraces the wild,’ it is located far enough away to avoid disturbing the leopards and operates with a minimal carbon footprint. Around the 11-acre area, indigenous planting extends into the surrounding wilderness, and all cottages face Liloda Hill, a known leopard refuge.

Know Your Host

Shatrunjay Pratap Singh - winemaker, photographer and naturalist – recognised in 2014 that proposed mining leases threatened both Rabari livelihoods and leopard habitat. Working closely with the local community, he helped prevent extensive mining in the region. Bera Safari Lodge was established as a conservation-led initiative that demonstrates how responsible tourism can strengthen wildlife conservation.

Facilities

The lodge operates its own well-equipped safari vehicles with experienced drivers and knowledgeable naturalists accompanying safaris, village visits and interactions with the Rabari community. Cycles are also available for exploring the surrounding countryside. A swimming pool offers welcome respite between drives or for a leisurely afternoon. Evening bonfires create atmospheric gathering spaces for conversation, sundowners and stargazing under Rajasthan's vast skies.

Dining

Guests gather in the dining room to enjoy hearty and delicious meals that incorporate the unique cooking styles of this arid region where water scarcity means milk, buttermilk and ghee are often used as substitutes. Inventive and delicious recipes showcase dried vegetables, while bajra (millet) and makkai (corn) serve as staple grains for breads that accompany regional curries and chutneys made with locally available spices. Comfort food is also a speciality, and private dining or in-room service is available on request.

Wildlife Watching at Jawai Bandh

The striking landscape of granite hills and scrub forests makes for excellent leopard sightings; however, don't miss the opportunity to see wolves and jackals as well. There are also over 150 bird species including flamingos, painted storks and Indian eagle-owls, making it a paradise for birders. Morning or late afternoon safaris offer the best light for both leopard activity and landscape photography.

Approximately a two-hour drive away, Ranakpur’s 15th-century Jain temple dedicated to Adinatha is renowned for its 1,444 intricately carved marble pillars — no two alike. The site offers architectural and spiritual depth beyond the safari landscape.
