Sustainability Story of Lchang Nang Retreat

Lchang Nang Retreat belongs to Nubra in the truest sense. It does not merely stand in the valley; it has learned from it. In Ladakh, where altitude, cold, water, sunlight, and season dictate the terms of life, the retreat’s Pinwheel story is a thoughtful study in adaptation.

Energy efficiency begins with an in-house captive solar power plant that supports kitchen appliances and water heaters. Each cottage has a solar water heater, while solar passive design helps capture winter sun and reduce summer heat. This is design behaving intelligently, with the landscape rather than against it.

Water is channelled through the property using traditional gravity-fed Ladakhi flood irrigation, carrying safe glacial water in a manner that honours local knowledge. Waste is handled through biodegradable toiletries, segregation, composting of wet waste for the organic garden, feeding suitable leftovers to cows, and separating recyclables. Guests and staff are also encouraged to pick up plastic litter during village walks, making responsibility part of the journey rather than a notice on a wall.

The retreat is culturally rooted in both construction and experience. It is recognised as the first traditionally built hotel in the region, reviving local building techniques through mud bricks, stone, and wood. Local temple artists have painted Buddhist motifs, and villagers have been shown the property to encourage pride in sustainable local skills.

Lchang Nang’s community story is equally strong. Local women are employed in housekeeping and gardening, while seasonal staff are supported through tie-ups with properties elsewhere in India, giving them year-round exposure, confidence, and professional growth. Local villagers, women’s collectives, artisans, performers, temple artists, and producers are all woven into the experience, from sea buckthorn sourced through a women’s collective to visits to Ladakhi kitchens and Ammalley, an initiative dedicated to local produce and craft.

Biodiversity is supported through spring replanting that helps maintain the habitat. Local materials, no cement, organic gardens, village produce, and cow-based kitchen produce give the retreat a light footprint. Lchang Nang is not sustainability performed for guests. It is Ladakh’s own wisdom, carefully hosted.
