Qayaam Gah, Srinagar

7
Jammu and Kashmir, India

A soulful retreat in paradise.

Qayaam Gah is set on a quiet ridge above Dal Lake, with uninterrupted views across the Kashmir Valley and the Zabarwan hills behind it. The name reflects its intent: Qayaam, a pause, and Gah, a home. The retreat draws from Sufi philosophy, expressed through atmosphere rather than symbol — calm, reflection, and inward stillness shape the experience.

Perfectly RARE

Start the day with walks in the surrounding hills and end it with a Sufi musical evening, with poetry by noted Kashmiri poets shaping the experience.

Destination

Framed by mountains, Srinagar moves at a measured pace, with Dal Lake and its floating gardens at its centre. Houseboats and shikaras move quietly across the water while Chinar-lined streets mark the passage of seasons. Artisans in the old city continue traditions of walnut wood carving, pashmina weaving, and papier-mâché. At dawn, vegetable sellers paddle through narrow canals while daily life unfolds along stone-lined lanes. Above the lake, in the Zabarwan hills, Qayaam Gah looks across the valley from a secluded ridge, offering stillness, distance, and wide views as Srinagar gradually reveals itself.

Qayaam Gah Design and Concept

Design

Architecture follows regional tradition, using local materials and craft. Timber beams, carved wood, and teak floors combine with contemporary spatial planning. Villas and cottages are named after Kashmiri mystics and poets such as Rumi, Lal Ded, and Habba Khatoon. At the centre lies Ruh, the shared heart of the retreat, where restaurant, lounge, and library come together in a space shaped by Kashmiri craftsmanship and cultural expression.

Know Your Host

AB Chapri Retreats curates small, low-impact properties for travellers seeking mindful experiences rooted in place. Led by Altaf Chapri Hussain, the brand emphasises harmony with landscape and community. Together with his brother Bilal Ahmed Chapri, he oversees properties including Neeleshwar Hermitage in Kerala and Qayaam Gah in Kashmir, each guided by sustainability and responsible tourism.

Facilities

Broad verandas open to uninterrupted views across Dal Lake and the valley landscape. Three suites follow a unified design language, with king-size beds, generous patios, and a shared living area with a study. Suites may be interconnected to form two-bedroom arrangements suited to families.

Dining

Cuisine reflects both region and season, using organic, locally sourced ingredients. Ruh, the central space, combines a restaurant, a lounge, and a library in an indoor–outdoor setting overlooking the Zabarwan mountains. Qalb, the open terrace, is designed for slow evenings, whether for tea, sunset drinks, or dinner under the open sky with live music. Spring water feeds the retreat, and organic gardens supply herbs and vegetables. Fish is sourced from the lake below, while poultry and dairy come from nearby villages.

Experiences

Qayaam Gah offers both stillness and movement. While the retreat itself encourages pause, the wider landscape invites exploration. The Driving Adventure programme is AB Chapri Retreats’ curated exploration of Kashmir’s mountain terrain through guided, open-top 4WD journeys. Designed as slow, immersive road experiences rather than high-speed expeditions, these drives trace routes through forested hills, alpine meadows, and lesser-travelled mountain roads. The programme allows guests to move between the brand’s Kashmir properties — including time at Sukoon, the restored houseboat on Dal Lake — while experiencing the region’s scale and topography in an unhurried way. Back at Qayaam Gah, days begin quietly with tea and yoga. Afternoons are often spent reading in Ruh, walking forest paths, or observing birdlife across the hillside. Evenings gather around the fire pit or the heated infinity pool overlooking Dal Lake, where conversation slows with the fading light. The retreat balances outward exploration with inward retreat, allowing guests to experience Kashmir through both landscape and pause.
