About Anahata Retreat

Goa is for everyone. Those wanting to party, head to the buzzing beaches of North Goa and those who just want the sun, sand and the sea ( at close proximity ) head further north to Mandrem and Ashwem beaches. Luxury in the modern connotation has no set dimensions, seemingly changing with every season and technology. Yet who can ignore the timeless luxury of soft silken sand underfoot, the refreshing feel of ocean spray on your skin, breath-taking sunsets and quite sunrises over the horizon. At Anahata Retreat, barefoot luxury beckons you to the quiet and clean beaches of Ashwem.

Anahata, is Sanskrit for heart chakra is where you will come unstuck and be accepted. Set at a touching distance from the beach, Anahata is set in a tropical garden with palms, hibiscus, an amazing variety of crotons around which huts set strategically to maximise views of the sea. The villas slightly stand away from the beach and the huts. This is where the five suites are located, air-conditioned with attached bathrooms and all modern conveniences. A part of the original construction, the exterior of the villa has been left untouched while inside, the décor is cool and mostly white and very comfortable.

The huts are set a few feet above the ground on sturdy stilts, all wood and bamboo from the inside, simple yet misses no detail. From a large central bed that roughly faces the sea in all the huts, with a cleverly crafted headboard that doubles up as a console, where a tea-coffee station, water and a small wooden sculpture rests to reading lights on the side for those who cannot miss their nightly reading ritual, the huts are aesthetic, simple and comfortable. Thatched and with a roof made of local grass, walls are made of sturdy straw mats to keep the elements out. Yet the outdoors exist close by through large doors, which frame the sea and the environs as a beautiful picture to wake up to each day. They bring in the ocean spray and moisture, and the colours of the sun. The shower alcove and toilet are separate and lined with bamboo while the vanity is a neatly arranged space with quality amenities, a clothes and towel ladder, designed to be invisible behind the large bed.  There is a lot of space in the huts even after the very large bed in the middle, bathrooms to the far end at the back, a luggage rack and a mini-fridge with some beer chilling in it always. A narrow veranda with a low railing, gloriously littered with fallen leaves with birds in constant chorus. This skirts about a third of the hut, ideal to put up your feet and sit-out.

The restaurant – Atelier, in front of the villa and adjacent to the huts is open to the elements, with an interesting lacy roof fashioned out of an army camouflage, gaily swinging paper lanterns overhead, chairs and wooden tables scattered around on the sandy floor. There is a high deck as well built on the edge for better views of the sea. Open through the day from breakfast to after dinner, Atelier is powered by an interesting menu of continental, local, Indian and vegan specialities. Smoothies and cocktails deserve a special mention and don’t come away without trying their Indian thali.  Do peek into the open kitchen and listen to the story of how the Menu of atelier came about.

Anahata boasts of one of the largest swimming pools, the sea… just a few steps from your hut or villa. And guests take full advantage of this facility day and night. A small two bed spa run by talented and trained masseuse from a local establishment, two yoga pavilions where Yoga teachers set up classes for guests to participate in are other facilities for guests. Yoga and Meditation groups often book Anahata for week long retreats. Anahata packs up for the summer and monsoons, when Rishal and Andrea, take time to pack up, renovate and retrain their staff for the season – October to April. Full of ideas for low impact tourism, Anahata just like your heart chakra rises and evolves every season!

Anahata is the kind of place, you would kick off your shoes, switch off your phones and head straight to the sea upon check-in, barefoot!
