Kumaon forms a part of the upper terai area of the Himalayas. It is beautiful and pristine, and as you shy away from the larger towns, still uninvaded by teeming tourist groups is the perfect destination to escape from the plains and from your daily routine.
Set in a remote village near Ranikhet in the Kumaon Hills, Junoon in the Hills is a place to unwind, relax, and re-discover yourself. Choose your idyll ….. solo or with friends and family. Spend time in contemplation, hike in the mountains, catch up on reading and music, just binge eat, or get your fill of sleep and silence.
At a height of about 4500 feet, 70km from the railhead at Kathgodam, Darmani is a small and sleepy village of a few hundred souls. Untouched by the hustle of modern life, until recently the village was served by a mountain path. Just a couple of years ago a small mountain road was constructed to connect the village to Garampani, finally providing easy motorable access.
Junoon in the Hills was built by the Sharma family as a hill retreat for themselves, complete with gardens, gazebos to sit out, decks to behold Himalayan views, a full-fledged kitchen, and a small gym. The stay options are in two separate buildings.
The Main House faces the valley and offers three bedrooms named the Blue Room, Green Room, and Yellow Room. Each room is a complete suite with an attached four feature bathroom, a large bedroom and storage cupboards essential for long stays. The Blue and Green rooms have king size beds, while the Yellow Room has a queen bed with an additional single bed. All rooms have ample space for a mattress to accommodate children below twelve years.
The Guest House is set a few steps up from the Main House and opens to views of the gardens as well as the hills beyond. With just two bedrooms, attached bathrooms, a kitchen, and a sit out area, it is ideal for a family of three or four.
The common area central to the Main House has a large lounge with a fireplace, and it opens to an upper level area with a pool table and TV. Daybeds, lounge chairs and sofas allow friends and families to sit together over a drink in the evening, play indoor games, or just chill together.
Dining is in the spacious dining room next to the kitchen. Meals can also be set out on the deck or in the garden on a clear day. Meals at Junoon are simple but satisfying, offering North Indian fare with a smattering of local Kumoani faourites. Food is always freshly made of local vegetables and served piping hot. The cook has been with the family for years and can even cater to limited requests of some of your favourites besides seasonal delicacies.
A Refreshment station allows you to make your own tea/coffee and freshly made squashes at your convenience.
When visiting for a long weekend, most visitors prefer to just stay in, relaxing and catching up with each other, getting pampered, playing pool, or staying fit in the (small but adequate) gym. Long walks along the country road are enjoyable, with some beautiful valley and snow-capped Himalayan views in winter. You can spend hours just soaking these in...
For the willing and adventurous, there are mountain trails winding through small villages all the way down to the stream at Garampani.
